The play some voices was written by Joe Penhall and directed by Simon Cellan Jones. It was firstly released on 25 August 2000 in the United Kingdom. The Character I’m playing Ray is schizophrenic, an alcoholic and has been sent to live with his brother Pete by the psychiatric hospital. Ray is very disobedient and doesn’t take the tablets he was instructed to take by his psychiatrist. He claims that he has been staying with Laura, his girlfriend, however Pete at first doesn't believe him. Eventually, Pete sarcastically remarks that if he wants to live with Laura, then he should and they should talk to psychiatrists about it to see if he is allowed to live with Laura. Ray is persistent and insists that he should stay with Laura. Pete gets fed up about it and tries to convince Ray in a calmer tone.
Moreover, Ray is emotionally unstable and to cope with his pain, he drinks a lot of alcohol like his father. Pete is annoyed that Ray is still drinking after what happened to his father that he tries to convince him to stop drinking. Ray is still stubborn about it and doesn't seem to want to stop drinking.
In the scene from some voices I performed, we highlighted the primary and secondary focuses. The primary focus is to explore how schizophrenia has a negative effect on families. This is shown through Ray who is schizophrenic and how his mental illness has caused Pete and Ray's relationship to become disjointed. The secondary focus is for Pete to get Ray to take his medicine and for him to make sure that Ray doesn't become his father. This is shown explicitly at the start of the scene when Pete says, " do you want to end up under the bridge as well". Pete implies that if he keeps drinking and throwing his life away, he will end up like his father. He repetitively keeps shouting to Ray to try and convince him to stop behaving like his father.
